To have a strong presence at SU and do the work we need to do on our own campus, as well as being able to support the national higher ed initiatives, having a substantial membership is crucial!
Membership is via a sliding scale based on salary and can be as low as $6.50/mo for adjuncts and under $20/mo for most SU faculty.

February Meeting: ICE On Campus

Join us on February 19th, 12:30pm, in ADMIN 203 to discuss the existential threat of ICE and CBP on campus and our response.
We will hear about legal and organizing strategies from our colleagues and discuss concrete ways we can help keep students, faculty, and staff safe. We will also discuss policies that AAUP can advocate for.

Immigration Action from AAUP National

Time Sensitive Response Requested: Seeking Examples of Harm from H1-B Policies:
The AAUP recently joined a suit challenging the Trump administration’s imposition of a $100K fee for H1-B visas. We are seeking more information from our members about how these policies affect you. Specifically, we are looking to hear from members who fit one of the following circumstances:
  • A member who has been impacted in their job search by the fact that relevant job postings say that no visa sponsorship will be available for the position(s).
  • A member who would or may need to leave the US in order to obtain an H1-B visa.
  • A member working in a US university abroad who would need to obtain an H1-B visa in order to return to the US.
If you think you fit into one of these categories, please reach out to Taylor Fox (tfox@aaup.org) with a brief description of how you have been impacted by the H1-B policy and we can set up a time for a conversation. Your information will be kept fully confidential. Please write to us from your personal email, and not your university account.

CJE Faculty and Staff Winter Welcome: You’re Invited

Friday, January 23 | 4pm - 5:30pm | Wyckoff Reading Room (LEML 313)
Sponsored by the Center for Jesuit Education and the SU AAUP, the winter welcome will be a chance for  conversation, community, and camaraderie. Light refreshments will be provided.
In Leading toward Liberation, Annmarie Caño writes “liberatory leadership is aimed at liberating systems and structures so that people can be fully human and do their best work to generate creative solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time." Let's come together and discuss what it means to be "fully human" and what it looks like to liberate the systems and structures that prevent us from doing our best work.

AAUP Core Skills Trainings

Provided by the national AAUP, this training is 5 sessions that run from 3:30pm PST - 5:30pm PST on, 2/2, 2/4, 2/9, 2/11, 2/18  on Zoom. It is put on for free by the AAUP organizers as part of the "Organize Every Campus" initiative and is based on curriculum developed at the UC Berkeley Labor Center.
The format is short instructions and information followed by breakout group exercises with our cohort of SU participants (and potentially some people from other universities in the region).

What is AAUP and its history at SU?

An AAUP chapter is a local branch of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), a professional organization dedicated to advancing academic freedom, shared governance, and the well-being of faculty and academic professionals in higher education. We are a grassroots organization that works to implement AAUP principles and policies at the campus level, advocating for faculty rights and promoting the common good of higher education. There are thousands of AAUP chapters around the country. Started in 1915, AAUP, it is a longstanding, and well-established, and accepted organization on many campuses and the SU chapter has been recently restarted (as of Spring 2025) after a period of dormancy. Chapters do a wide variety of work from advocating for specific changes on campus to the really important work of banding together nationally to fight for higher ed (for example filing lawsuits, organizing actions and pushback to Trump admin attacks). The exact work and power of the SU chapter will be entirely dependent on each and every one of us joining together and determining what we want to accomplish as a collective force on campus.

–Major Legal Victory for AAUP halting Trump’s attack on Higher Ed
In April, the national AAUP and our Harvard chapter, alongside the United Auto Workers, filed the lawsuit seeking to stop the Trump administration’s attack on Harvard. Pressured by our filing, the Harvard administration subsequently filed suit and the cases were linked. You can read more about the case here.
