The ongoing attacks on higher-ed make it more urgent than ever for faculty around the country to come together. Here at SU we are building a voice and power on campus to truly represent and advocate for the common good of higher education.
To have a strong presence at SU and do the work we need to do on our own campus, as well as being able to support the national higher ed initiatives, having a substantial membership is crucial!
Membership is via a sliding scale based on salary and can be as low as $6.50/mo for adjuncts and under $20/mo for most SU faculty.

February Meeting: ICE On Campus

Join us on February 19th, 12:30pm, in ADMIN 203 to discuss the existential threat of ICE and CBP on campus and our response.
We will hear about legal and organizing strategies from our colleagues and discuss concrete ways we can help keep students, faculty, and staff safe. We will also discuss policies that AAUP can advocate for.

Immigration Action from AAUP National

AAUP President Todd Wolfson issued a statement in response to the shooting of Alex Pretti. Read it here.
Time Sensitive Response Requested: Seeking Examples of Harm from H1-B Policies:
The AAUP recently joined a suit challenging the Trump administration’s imposition of a $100K fee for H1-B visas. We are seeking more information from our members about how these policies affect you. Specifically, we are looking to hear from members who fit one of the following circumstances:
  • A member who has been impacted in their job search by the fact that relevant job postings say that no visa sponsorship will be available for the position(s).
  • A member who would or may need to leave the US in order to obtain an H1-B visa.
  • A member working in a US university abroad who would need to obtain an H1-B visa in order to return to the US.
If you think you fit into one of these categories, please reach out to Taylor Fox (tfox@aaup.org) with a brief description of how you have been impacted by the H1-B policy and we can set up a time for a conversation. Your information will be kept fully confidential. Please write to us from your personal email, and not your university account.

AAUP National “ICE Out” Webinar

Sunday, February 15, 4 p.m. PST
On this call, you’ll hear how organizers in Minneapolis and beyond moved from defense to offense—picking a few winnable targets and escalating sustained, nonviolent pressure that hit brands and bottom lines. You’ll leave with concrete tools to map your university’s ties, link up with others on your campus, and run an escalating campaign that forces decision-makers to drop ICE’s billionaire partners. RSVP here.

From Our Campus Partners

The Center for Jesuit Education facilitated a Faculty Mission Dialogue last week that discussed materials put out by the Ignatian Solidarity Network, and this linked document with statements by various Catholic leaders.

Membership Update

During fall quarter, our membership has grown by over 50%! This is an incredible achievement in such a short time! Keep inviting your friends and colleagues.

AAUP National Resources

Back-to-School Toolkit: resources on organizing, academic freedom and campus free speech, mass mobilization, racial justice and equality, supporting international communities, and digital safety to help you build strong chapters, protect campus communities, and escalate the fight back against the destruction of higher education in this country.
Advisory for Academic Workers:In a moment when it is becoming increasingly difficult to predict the consequences of our online speech and choices, the AAUP and Faculty First Responders are issuing guidance to AAUP members and other academic workers. It includes resources on what to do if you are experiencing targeted harassment, tips on digital security and engaging with social media, and resources available from the AAUP and the AFT.

Quote of the Month

"The struggle for immigration justice and the struggle to re-orient higher ed for the public good are one and the same. Both institutions have long been driven by the same logics of austerity, contingency, and authoritarian control."

~ Levin Kim, Chair of Higher Education Labor United

About Us

AAUP is a national organization that has advocated and fought for both higher education and issues related to faculty welfare, shared governance, and academic freedom for over 100 years. In addition to the ongoing attacks on higher-ed and at the federal level, challenges to shared governance and to the value of faculty expertise here at SU make it more urgent than ever for faculty to build solidarity and a collective voice. The SU chapter of AAUP is dedicated to creating a space for all faculty and staff to be heard and to speaking with a unified voice on issues vital to our professional lives.
